Originally made from gourds, udu drums were later fashioned
in clay by Nigerian potters. Ceramicist Frank Giorgini is to be credited with
bringing the art form to the United States, where today many artists are experimenting
with the form.
My personal approach to the udu is inspired by the
shapes of Southwest American Indian pots. In a synthesis of ancient and modern
techniques, the drums are finished with a Raku or Kosai glaze process.
